Hybrid Transmission based on Toroidal CVT
Patent validity till 2037
This invention has features and capabilities just like the belt driven hybrid transmission. It uses three input disks and three rotors connecting them. Two out of three disks connect to two independent power sources i.e., fuel engine and electric motor while the third is the output disk that drives the vehicle. This allows for adding up the torque and power from fuel engine and electric motor while applying the gears independently to fuel engine and electric motor. These power sources can be driven at different RPMs to enable them to simultaneously deliver their peak power/efficiency.
Just like the belt driven hybrid CVT, this transmission combines the maximum torque from fuel engine and maximum torque from electric motor. It also has similar benefits of AWD just like the belt driven CVT transmission. One of the disks that draws power from electric motor, also acts as output disk and it can be connected to the differential. These various aspects of transmission’s capabilities are described in detail in the patent.
